Location

The small town of Lone Pine is located on HWY #395 in the Owens Valley just at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Looming due west is Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain in the Continental United States (14944 feet). The unique Alabama Hills are at the base of the High Sierra, which offer a unique opportunity to photograph some of the most magnificent rock formations in the United States. The hills have been a backdrop for many television and movie epics. In contrast, Whitney Portal (8000feet) offers lush Alpine Meadows, a Redwood and Pine Forest and a breathtaking waterfall tumbling through the high granite cliffs. We will visit the ghost towns of Darwin and Cerro Gordo, once thriving silver mining communities, where you will find an abundant variety of old equipment and buildings to photograph. You will find Lone Pine to be a photographers' paradise. We can even show you where Ansel Adams planted his tripod for some of his most famous images.

Workshop

This is a six-day session of intense work concentrating on the skills associated with large format fine art photography presented in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Although the workshop is designed for the large format photographer, those using any format are welcome and will benefit from the instruction. Specific topics to be covered are optics, sensitometry (metering), reciprocity, exposure control, contrast control (Zone System), bellows compensation, filter selection & filter factors, camera movements for perspective and focus control, field logistics and the creative process.

Practice makes perfect! We have found that "hands-on" teaching methods are the most beneficial. Instruction in the field makes it possible to quickly identify and correct student problems. We spend the majority of our time in the field photographing and gaining experience. Both planned and spontaneous lectures are used throughout the workshop allowing all us to learn from the collective experiences of the group. Formal lectures are kept to the minimum necessary to insure a clear group understanding of the key objectives. Evening sessions continue the learning environment in a friendly, informal setting where lectures and discussions are less technical and more philosophical. Included is Richard Garrod's superb discussion of the creative process, and our portfolio reviews. There will be a generous packet of handout materials provided to each participant, and there may even be a surprise gift or two.
